While I am reading a book title "Leadership That Builds" by Glenn Johnson, on its chapter title "A leader Must Have Integrity", I remember my life verse in Psalm 111:10 "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and all who follow His precepts have good understanding, to Him belongs eternal praise." The book explains that fearing God is trusting Him with confidence, but this may fail when you feel guilty at some point in your life. The hindrance of our confidence in God is the feeling of guilt. In Nehemiah (Book in the Old Testament), which is the scriptural foundation of the said book, confession is Nehemiah's way on gaining confidence in God. He said in Nehemiah 1:6 "let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for your servants, the Israelites, confessing the sins of the Israelites, which we have sinned against you. Both I and my family have sinned."
In relation to this week gospel lectionary in Matthew 4:1-11 (The Temptation of Jesus), Jesus was tempted but not sinned because He stood in the Word of God. When I asked our young people in the church about their perception on the word "Temptation" they said that it is something that we like doing but lead us away from the will of God, it is something that we gave in and dishonor God."
Admit it or not, every person is tempted and sometimes resist or give in. By being defeated by a temptation, a person or a Christian loses his confidence in God. But when we remember in John 14:6, "Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me", we will know the truth and the truth will set us free (John 8:32). The truth that even though we were tempted and sinned, did what we should not, spoke wrongly or judged others, God loves us and if we confess God forgives and will cleanse us from our unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
Last night I accidentally listened to a song title "His Mercy Is More" written by Matt Papa and Matt Boswell, the lyrics says, "Our sins they are many, His mercy is more". Indeed, God's mercy is overflowing and His love for all of us is unconditional.
In this Lenten Season (a period of repentance), we prepare ourselves by confession and repentance and coming to God with a contrite and humble heart.
Dear God, I am one of the sinners in this world. I confess that from every word I said, action that I did and might hurt other people and most especially You, I am sorry that I dishonor You with my actions, thoughts, and words. I need You Lord to please help me, renew me, purify me, and free me from guilt. I thank You God, for Your love, mercy, and forgiveness, through Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior. Amen.
